Chinese 14th/15th Century Ming Dynasty (or earlier) Wood Carving of
Period & Style : Circa 14th/15th century, or earlier, early Ming dynasty Material : Wood, mineral colours painted Size & Weight : H. 31 in. ( 79 cm ) W. 16.53 in. ( 42 cm ) Condition : Some cracks; some damages in left hair, right finger, and base. This wood carving was carved in dressing a 10th/13th century typical armour, so it might be carved earlier, up to 13th century. In Shanxi area, there were lots of old temples, constructed in Tang dynasty ( 8th century ) and still kept in constructing until Ming ( 16th century ). Some of Tang and Song sculptures were carved in dressing the era armour. In early Ming, the artists might imitate the early sculpture's dressing, so we would rather to identify it is an early Ming dynasty piece. |
